Hi everyone! Liv here. Your friendly neighborhood psychic medium. This week I’m going to write about how similar to the Lorax, “I speak for the trees!” But seriously, all joking aside plants do talk, and here’s how.

Let’s Talk Science

On a biological level trees and other plants can communicate to each other using their root systems. As humans, we have suspected that plants have established a form of communication between their roots and associated physiological systems but it hasn’t been until relatively recently that scientists have decided to delve deeper into these theories.

In general, what scientists have been able to figure out is that plants (we’ll use trees for our examples) can communicate to one another using their root systems. Their root systems are extremely complex consisting of more than just what meets the eye.

Root System’s Simplified

The root system of a tree and other plants can be simplified to the roots themselves (what we can see) root hairs (tiny, barely visible extensions of the plant’s roots), certain fungi that extend from the plant’s roots and root hairs (some of these fungi are visible to the naked eye and others are not), and then a microscopic area encompassing the roots, roots hairs, and fungi known as the rhizosphere which consists of bacteria and microbes that work together with the fungi, root hairs, and roots to create the complex basis of communication that trees use to talk to one another.

“Water” They Talking About?

Some of the circumstances in which trees will use their root systems to communicate with one another include:

  • Water availability

  • Nutrient/food and resource sharing

  • Competition for space and resources

  • Warning of insect/parasite infestation

You’re Such a “Fungi”

All of this is communicated using sophisticated chemical pathways that are created by the trees to inform one another about any of the above situations. Think of the fungi connected to the tree’s roots as helpers. The fungi intertwined with the tree’s root systems are accepted by the tree only if the fungus that wishes to live off of it helps with the tree’s communication and other functions.

The way in which the fungi assist the trees in their communication is by acting as extensions of their root systems. A tree’s roots can only extend so far by themselves, limiting how far they can biologically communicate with one another. Through evolution, trees have forged what’s known as a mutualistic relationship with certain fungi in order to enhance their communication skills.

Extending The Underground Olive Branch

Some fungi help trees to produce more chemical secretions to better express what they need to say. Others simply reach and grow much farther than the tree’s roots can naturally grow. Allowing the tree to branch out much more underground and physically extending how far it can send out signals to and reach surrounding trees to talk. The fungi and the rhizosphere around the tree’s roots work together to help trees communicate and grow.

Isn’t that AMAZING?!! Gosh, I get so excited to talk about it. Science! Anyways, this is the biological and scientifically understood way in which plants can communicate with one another. But what about spiritually?

Using Science To Explain Spirituality

Plainly put, as a psychic medium I am able to speak to the dead (their souls that is). As a scientist, I like to rationalize my seemingly irrational abilities by attributing them to following The 3rd Law of Thermodynamics. This law states that energy is neither created nor destroyed. It is simply converted from one form to another.

Scientists who do not believe in an afterlife rationalize that as humans we are solely (no pun intended) our physical bodies. That once our physical bodies stop producing active or kinetic energy and we “die” only our physical bodies are left to follow The 3rd Law of Thermodynamics. This being that our bodies decompose and the energy associated with them disperse into the environment around us…But here is where I break off from their rationale.

Consciousness = Soul

I believe that we are not only our physical bodies. We are our consciousness as well. I attribute our consciousness to our body’s soul. I believe that once our physical bodies expire our souls no longer have a home to reside in. So where do souls go if energy is neither created nor destroyed?

This is where Heaven, Spirit, Source, or whatever else you’d like to call it comes in. The place in which souls can choose to reside when they are not flouncing through our physical plane of existence.

Looks Like a Job For Reddit OR Your MetaPsyckicks!

To discuss this further we’d have to dive into alternate universes and parallel dimensions which would call for a better understanding of physics and philosophy but today we’re going to talk about trees. So how does this all relate?

Almost Older Than Dirt

Trees emerged from existence about 400 million years ago.  The more complex plant life forms we have today such as trees and flowers developed from their ancestors. These “simpler” plant grandparents were able to metabolize (eat) the harsh organic matter of the earth such as sulfur, and carbon dioxide using the power of sunlight (photosynthesis) and, for lack of a better term, “poop” out oxygen.

Without this rapid influx of oxygen into the early Earth’s atmosphere from the ancestors of modern-day vegetation, the human race, and life as we know it would not exist.

Little Ole Us

With that being said, I believe that if humans who merged into life about 7 million years ago can believe they have a soul and a metaphysical and spiritual reality, then why is it such a far-fetched idea for plants? Plants being arguably the single most important reason for our existence. And way older than us.

It’s All Just Energy

As I have already said, I am a psychic medium. I speak to the souls of the dead and can interpret and read the energies of animals. Please notice the keywords of “energy” and “energies” in the last sentence.

As a psychic medium, when I am doing a reading for a client whether it be channeling a loved one’s soul (human or animal) or listening to what a living pet has to share about their life and surroundings, I am merely channeling the energy associated with the soul or animal. Plants are almost the exact same thing.

How It All Started: The Finicky Ficus

I noticed that I could pick up on the energies of plants when I was in high school. I was studying at the library one day after school and I remember having the feeling of being afraid of heights. I could hear annoying children whispering too loudly, see certain people I’d never met before and feel the ostentatious emotions “I” had for those people.

Well, I was studying for my history class and clearly not thinking those random thoughts… So I scanned my surroundings and saw a medium-sized ficus placed squarely on top of a circular step stool in the corner of the room. As I gazed at this plant it continued to show me the people it found annoying who would visit the library, complained of the noisy children, and told me it didn’t like being placed so high up on the step stool.

I struggled with my mediumship then, and really thought I had gone bonkers. Honestly, I thought I had lost all my marbles.

I’m Not Crazy; You’re Crazy; No We’re Crazy

I kept this encounter to myself and even went as far as to not sit anywhere near that ficus when I came back to the library. It wasn’t until one day after school I walked over to meet my mother. She was studying at the library as well that day and had arrived before I was dismissed from class. On my way over to the building, she had informed me she had already saved a table for us and was waiting for me.

As I turned the corner looking for my mother my heart dropped to my feet when I saw she was sitting at the table by the talkative ficus.

I steeled myself as I sat down next to her. Desperately trying to shut out any plant talk. About 45 minutes had passed and I thought that the plant had finally shut up and wasn’t going to bother me anymore when my mother looked up at me and said, “Is that plant talking to you too?”

I guess if you’re new to our blog, I should mention that my mother is a psychic medium too. It’s genetic! Anyways, outed by my mother’s exclamation I knew I had to come clean. I shared with her what the ficus had already said to me and our stories matched up perfectly.

After matching our story’s my mother got up and said, “We should move him.” And proceeded to set him on the ground.  Almost immediately the plant began thanking us. From then on, my mother and I would sit by the library ficus and listen to its silly rants about the other people of the library, its likes, and dislikes, etc. We both thought we were crazy, but at least we were cookoo together.

Psychic Plant Communication

Now as I’ve gotten older, my metaphysical abilities have changed and grown in many ways and I have learned that there are other psychic mediums who can listen to plants as well.

It is my understanding that being able to communicate to pants is a part of my psychic abilities since they are living. But they do utilize all three of my psychic abilities of past, present, and future. But they energetically present on the right side of my body which I attribute to being associated with souls and Spirit. So it really is a bit unclear for me.

I have only ever communicated to living plants and am unsure if I can communicate with dead plants or even if they’d want to. As far as I have come to think, plants are extremely old and spiritual creatures that are metaphysically much more complex than we know.
